helps children remember what they learned the year before. Research shows that reading as few as eight books a summer stops the summer slide. Those eight books create a "bridge" between June and September.

offers lots of learning activities and safe, fun events— all with an eye to engaging youngsters and keeping their skills sharp during the summer.
Some of the activities are focused on specific age groups; others involve the whole family. Librarians select the materials and plan the activities. While nothing is required, every success is applauded. Year in, year out, our summer reading programs get rave reviews!
is a time-honored American tradition. And there's no doubt about it…youngsters need a break from blackboards and backpacks.
Children learn best when their learning is not interrupted. And summer vacation is a long interruption! Without practice, children forget facts and important "how to" skills. They fall behind because they can't practice these skills during the summer. Losing skills over the summer is called the "summer slide".
Because children forget up to 22% of what they learned during the previous school year, teachers must take September and October to review material taught the year before. Year in, year out, children lose two whole months to the summer slide. Over the course of their schooling, that adds up to two whole years of lost progress.
